DIY Chocolate Bonbons Wedding Favors

I love chocolate. That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who reads A Bride On A Budget on a regular basis. So, at our wedding, we had a full candy bar to end the night. Our guests left with huge bags of treats to enjoy on the way home. A sweet treat is definitely the way to go (literally). So these DIY Chocolate Bonbons Wedding Favors are perfect.

They were inspired by a chocolate that we had seen when we went to Hilton Head Island.

Those chocolates were gorgeous. They were spray painted chocolate bonbons. Some had a spice to them and others were just plain dark chocolate. All of them, though, were beautiful.

I enjoyed a few at the reception -- and then put a couple extra in a napkin to bring home to my mom. When it comes to chocolate, I have no shame. Especially when it comes to sharing the treats with my mom.

If you feel the same, you'll love these DIY Chocolate Bonbons Wedding Favors.

The key to these is purchasing the round silicone ice cube tray I used for this post. It makes perfectly shaped bonbons. Other trays may be able to sub in, but they won't look as perfect as these do. And every time you DIY something for your wedding, you want to assure it's perfect.

What You'll Need:

Chocolate chips
Colored candy melts

What You'll Do:

Wash and dry the round silicone ice cube tray. Make sure it's dried completely because any left over water bubbles will create holes in the chocolate.

Use a garlic grater to grate the colored candy melts into the bottoms of each cavity in the ice cube tray. Don't over fill them, though. You want to see the chocolate through them.

Melt the chocolate chips. I suggest high-end chocolate chips for this. All you'll really taste is the chocolate, so you don't want one that tastes waxy. That's also why -- as pretty as it may be -- I wouldn't suggest making these with candy melts. Those kind of taste gross in large doses.

Spoon the melted chocolate into each ice cube tray cavity.

You want to fill it just about to the top, then bang the tray on a flat surface -- carefully -- to flatten it.

Put the tray in the freezer until the chocolate is hardened.

The trays I linked above come in a set of three and each tray makes 24 bonbons. I would definitely make three trays at once.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can actually come up with chocolate bonbon filling recipe. Honestly, though, that's a lot of work and you might not have that sort of time during wedding week.

To do that, though, fill the outside of the ice cube tray, then put it in the freezer to harden. Take it out, then use a pastry bag to squeeze in the chocolate bonbon fillings. Then, add another layer of chocolate. Put it back in the freezer.

When the chocolate is hardened, you can easily push the bottoms of the ice cube cavities (that's the silicone part). You can store them in the freezer until you're ready to pack them.

You can put a few in a treat bag and leave one at each seat. Or, you can just set them out after the wedding reception and let your guests grab them on the way out.
